The Creative Travel Movement

Is it just me, or is there a creative travel movement going on? By that I mean, are people going traveling more, specifically with the aim to engage in more creative or artistic activities, and are more creative and artistic people taking time off work to seek travel opportunities to become more inspired?

Recently I have come across a few start-up companies that are offering a new approach to travel. They are offering one-of-a-kind experiences that involve getting to know a professional artist and their craft intimately on a retreat holiday, or indulging in learning traditional crafts from the country of origin with the local makers.

I feel that the need to travel is becoming more than just ticking off a list of must-see places and relaxing by the pool for a lot of people. Many want to experience something deeper and more challenging (not in the sense of survival mode), in terms of wanting to challenge themselves on learning new skills while away, learning about the world from locals, inspiring their creative thoughts on a more authentic level and expecting more purpose to their travel.

VAWAA (Vacation With An Artist)

Vacation with an Artist, allows you to book one-on-one time with professionals in a number of different fine art disciplines and spend time in their studios for stays of up to 6 days. Some of the experiences include Textile Printing in France, Paper Mache in Spain and Print Making in Italy and Ceramics in India.

“VAWAA helps you discover and book vacations with artists who are masters at their craft and creative ambassadors of the city they live in. Spend a few days in the artist’s studio learning about something that you are passionate about – from photography in the mountains of Slovenia, Anatolian dance in enchanting Istanbul, to rattan weaving on the island of Penang. Curated with love, we hope you’ll enjoy your vacation with an artist and come home feeling inspired.”

The Thread Caravan

Thread Caravan explores the concept of boutique creative experiences, bringing you closer to the authentic and traditional crafting techniques that make up the things we purchase in today’s western society. It allows for a connection, appreciation, understanding and education on the people and the craft, in such places as Guatemala and Panama.

“Our trips show participants firsthand the effort that goes into making the goods they purchase, allowing them to cultivate an appreciation for the intricacies of the craft. This knowledge allows consumer values to shift from quantity to quality, doing away with disposable buying patterns, and thus conserving the Earth’s limited resources. We can learn tremendous amounts through travel. As we experience new people, places and things, we are more capable of seeing life through the eyes of others. Thread Caravan trips spread artisanal knowledge; but more importantly, they expand participants’ and artists’ world view by connecting the two.”

Damesly

Damesly is a travel tour company for the wanderlust and creative female traveller… sounds like it’s perfect for those of us seeking Creativity + Adventure! They run travel workshops with the “women you’d like to meet at the places you’d like to see”. Their workshop tours include Photography at the Grand Canyon, Getting Creative in New Orleans and personal growth in Hawaii.

“We believe that travel is the best way to personal growth, but how does travel factor into our professional lives? We created Damesly to bridge both worlds. Our adventures are designed to allow women to learn a new skill, perfect a new passion or just combine travel with immersion in a new community.

Our hands-on workshops feature women who lead the way in their fields. It’s all of the information you’d get in a stuffy conference, limited to a group of 20 or less, with the world as the backdrop. We’re forming life-long personal and professional relationships, in really cool places.”

Women’s Travel Fest

A new conference started especially for solo women travellers! How cool is that?! Women’s travel Fest runs for 3 days in March in New York City. I so wish I was going to that, as each year they have many inspiring speakers and networking opportunities to meet like-minded business women who love Creativity + Adventure.

“We’re Women. We Travel Solo. And We Love It!”

We’ve experienced first-hand how travel transforms: Traveling gave us new careers, introduced us to incredible people, and showed us the beauty of life in a way we hadn’t felt before we stepped on a plane. At the same time, we understand how different the travel experience is for women, and how important it is for more women to get out and live their dreams. We hear from women how they want to travel, but they’re afraid, or they don’t think they’re brave enough to go solo, or they’re intimidated by the prospect of being alone abroad. That’s why we’ve created this incredible annual event, to inspire, empower and celebrate travel.”

Experiences range from street art tours, city photography walking tours, foodie tours to toilet tours! It’s a great way to spend an afternoon seeing through a local’s eyes, rather than just plotting out the usual tourist routes.

“Vayable appeals to experience-hungry Millennials, by connecting solos with creatives and professionals for one-on-one workshops and experiential holidays.”
