5. Enjoy the Colourful Venice Canals

Not many people know it, but Venice was named after the European city of Venice because it actually does have a few streets of canals behind the beach area (the main one being Canal Street). It’s a great place to go for a stroll, as it is generally quiet and there is so much colourful quirky-ness to soak in! The houses are all painted bright colours with funny garden accents, painted canoes and giant flamingo floats.

This really is a fabulous place to sit and sketch, paint or wander around and enjoy photography.

Location: Start in Canal Street, Venice, CA 90292

Open: 24hours, it is a residential area, so respect the neighbors!

6. Stroll the Rose Bowl Flea Market

The Rose Bowl Flea Market is very iconic in California as being the largest and most famous, with celebrities and interior designers frequenting the stalls to find unique wares for decorating their homes and wearing on the red carpet. It is located a little out of the city centre in Pasadena (Hello Uber!), but totally worth the trip.

I’ve been to A LOT of flea markets around the world and I have to say that this has been one of the most impressive!

There are stalls all the way around the stadium, filtering into the nearby paddock and all around the grounds. My tip would be to arrive early, bring plenty of water in summer (as it gets very hot!), pack some food (as the food is limited and expensive) and bring cash if you are planning to shop.

Have an idea of what you might be looking for before going, as there are sections within the market for new handmade goods, antique home wares, rugs, furniture, vintage clothing, vintage accessories, western clothing and boots.

Location: 1001 Rose Bowl Dr, Pasadena, CA 91103

Open: Sundays Only, 9am to 3pm

Cost: Entry is 7am $16 / 8am $13 / 9am $10 USD

10. Admire the Architecture of the Disney Concert Hall

This is one building you don’t want to miss seeing! It’s designed by the same dude (Frank Gehry), who also designed the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain. It’s mesmerizing sheets on metal reflect all kinds of light and play an illusion on your eyes, looking like the sails of a boat in the wind. Tours are available inside also, but really the main inspiration is all about the architecture.
